FENCING

Fencing has always fascinated me and has been the one sport that captivated me from a young age. Despite my keen interest in this sport from my early years, I have never ventured into this until my university days after being selected to be a member of NUS Fencing Club, where I train weekly during the evenings in NUS and at Absolute Fencing Club as an Épée fencer.

HISTORY & CHINESE LITERATURE

Chinese Women in Context

National University of Singapore

2024

According to conventional wisdom, Chinese women in history were particularly oppressed. It was only in the modern period that the patriarchal system started to break down and gender equality was finally realized. Such a simplistic view of dividing Chinese women’s experiences into two mutually exclusive categories of “traditional” and “modern” is misleading.

This course sets out to provide a more complex and nuanced picture of the life of Chinese women over time in China and elsewhere. Topics cover include marriage, women’s education, works and property rights, ideas about the female body and chastity and so on.

Chinese Tradition

National University of Singapore

2024

A general survey of the cultural tradition of China gave me a deeper understanding of how the Chinese lived and worked in the traditional era, their institutions and their thinking. The "Great tradition" and the "Small tradition" of Chinese society and their relevance to the present were  examined. Topics of discussion include dearly Chinese worldview, Chinese religiosity, Chinese symbolism, Chinese names, Chinese festivals and folk customs. This course afforded me a better appreciation of the linkage between Chinese traditions in the past and modern society.

Chinese Music, Language & Literature

National University of Singapore

2023

Explored the complex relationships underlying Chinese music, language and literature.
Focussed on Chinese music from the perspective of popular music produced in the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. These four economies have developed different strands of popular music in Mandarin and various Chinese dialects, due to different linguistic and ideological environments.

Learnt how Chinese popular music draws upon the aesthetics of Chinese literature and traditional Chinese music, and how the music has hybridised influences from foreign musical genres, thus expressing different versions of “Chineseness”.

Proposed a game idea that was eventually selected to be made into a Chinese activity game kit and was sold in the museum giftshop as part of Singapore Heritage Fest 2022.

Surrounding the theme of transport vehicles being used in the past, children can learn about this interesting piece of Singapore history, while improving their Chinese through this game kit that was inspired by the "Aeroplane Game", a traditional Singaporean childhood boardgame.

This game kit was a joint collaboration between River Valley High School and Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall.
